THE SEVEN CATS OF COLOUR HOUSE
At the end of a quiet lane stood a studio called Colour House.
Its owner, Meera, had once painted monsoon skies, crowded markets and trees glowing in evening light. But after her grandmother died, every colour on her palette seemed wrong.
Red felt too loud. Yellow looked dishonest. Blue reminded her of everything she missed.
So Meera stopped painting.
One afternoon, she returned to the studio and found seven cats sitting in a perfect row across her table. Each was a different colour: flame-orange, saffron-yellow, leaf-green, river-blue, violet, rose-red and one so pale it was almost invisible.
“You cannot stay here,” Meera said.
The orange cat dipped its tail into her paint and drew a bright line across a blank page.
The others followed.
Soon the studio walls filled with curls, pawprints and translucent rivers of colour. Meera tried to chase the cats away, but they slipped directly into the painting.
Without thinking, she reached after them—and fell through the paper.
On the other side lay a colourless city.
The seven cats scattered through its streets, each returning something that had disappeared. The yellow cat placed light inside windows. Green woke the sleeping gardens. Orange restored warmth to kitchen fires. Rose returned blushes to shy faces.
But the blue cat sat beside a dry fountain and refused to move.
“Why aren’t you helping?” Meera asked.
The cat looked at her with eyes the colour of rain.
Because you left me behind, it seemed to say.
Meera understood. She had tried to remove sadness from her life as though it were an ugly colour. But without blue, the city had no rivers, no shadows, no distant mountains and no sky.
She knelt beside the fountain.
“I miss her,” she whispered.
A single tear fell into the empty basin.
Water rose at once, clear and intensely blue. It flowed through the streets, carrying every restored colour with it. The city shimmered—not because sorrow had vanished, but because it finally had a place among everything else.
When Meera opened her eyes, she was back in the studio. The seven cats were asleep around a new painting.
It showed her grandmother sitting beneath a blue monsoon sky, smiling as coloured cats curled around her feet.
Meera hung it in the window.
From then on, Colour House welcomed anyone who had lost a part of their palette. Some visitors needed courage-red. Others needed patient-green or hopeful-yellow.
And sometimes, when grief sat silently beside them, a blue cat appeared, placed one paw upon the paper and showed them that even sadness could become something beautiful.
