THE CITY PAINTED BY SUNSET
Beyond seven dry hills stood a city built entirely in grey.
Its towers were grey. Its streets were grey. Even the clothes hanging from balconies seemed to lose their colour after a single day.
The city had not always looked this way. Long ago, its domes had shone in saffron, rose, copper and violet. But its ruler feared change. He ordered every building painted the same shade and commanded the gates to close before sunset, when the sky became dangerously unpredictable.
A young muralist named Rumi worked secretly at night.
She collected forbidden colours wherever she found them: pink from bougainvillea petals, gold from turmeric, purple from crushed berries and red from the dust beneath old temple flags.
Still, something was missing. Her paintings had colour, but no light.
One evening, Rumi climbed the tallest tower and watched the sun sinking behind the locked western gate.
“Why do you never enter our city?” she called.
“Because your gates are closed,” replied the sunset.
Rumi hurried to the ruler.
“Open them for one evening,” she begged.
The ruler refused. “The sunset changes every moment. Such disorder would frighten people.”
That night, Rumi painted a tiny door upon the western wall using every colour she possessed.
At dusk, the painted door opened.
Sunlight poured through it like a river.
It swept across the city, climbing towers and flowing over domes. Grey walls became rose and gold. Windows burned with crimson reflections. Even the shadows turned violet.
People filled the streets. Many had never seen their city in colour. Some laughed; others wept.
The ruler ordered the door covered, but every layer of grey paint became another shade of sunset.
At last, he looked from his palace window and saw that the city had not descended into chaos. It had become more itself than ever before.
The western gates were opened permanently.
From then on, nobody painted the city according to a single plan. Each generation added new towers, colours and impossible shapes. Sunset entered every evening and changed them again.
Rumi’s little painted door remained in the wall, though it never opened twice.
Beneath it she wrote:
Beauty does not ask permission to change.
